Art Club

Twatasha Primary School is located in Luapula, Zambia.  The province is known as being underdeveloped and few national resources, such as teachers and educational materials, make it far enough north to reach the region.

I began working as a Peace Corps Volunteer at Twatasha Primary in 2015 and found out that no after school programs existed.  I started leading art club using mainly local resources and some color pencils shipped from the states.  I had about 80 color pencils and around 70 students attended each meeting.  The kids were fantastic about sharing.  Their creativity flowed and I was lucky enough to be there to see their imaginations put down on paper.  I was so happy to give them an outlet and create a fun and safe space to create art.  I hope that they are able to continue expressing themselves through art throughout the rest of their lives.
